Wood Cemetery
The Wood Family Cemetery is located on 57th Street North about one block north of 1st Avenue North (U. S. Highway 11) in the Woodlawn Section of Birmingham. The cemetery is to the eastern side of Woodlawn High School. The cemetery is fenced and in excellent condition except for some minor vandalism. The cemetery is well maintained by the Wood descendants. Obadiah and son Edmund Wood came to this area from South Carolina about 1824. The area was at that time still contested between white settlers and Native Americans. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 cleared the way for further settlement. In completing this transcription, I also completed a Family Tree of this Wood Family in order to ensure that I have properly identified the relationship between individuals. As in all genealogical endeavors, I cannot guarantee that a mistake has not been made in linking these individuals. If an error is found, please contact me thru my website at dixiestones.net and I will make a change. Please cite where the information came from. I have placed the Alabama Death & Burial Index Film Number by those names where such a record can be found. Most of these records are correct however, I have found instances where either an error in recording or an error in transcribing has been made. One also must consider that the source individual of the information provided may have unwittingly provided wrong information. In this regard, the Family Tree was helpful in deciding what information was correct. The World War One Draft Registration Card usually provides a date of birth for the registrant but I have found that for some reason or other, the year may be off by one year on many of the forms. The Registration Card does not provide information about whether or not the individual served in the military, but does indicate where the person was residing at the time he completed the card. Service during the Civil War has been verified thru the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers & Sailors Data Base. This transcription was completed in May, 2013. It is true and accurate to the best of my ability and training. -Carl W. Dykes Trussville, AL. http://www.dixiestones.net
