Greenwood Cemetery is located near the Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport at the intersection of Aviation Avenue and Messer Airport Highway. Over the years the cemetery has also been known as the Woodlawn Colored Cemetery or Union Cemetery. The cemetery was established about 1890 and is still in use. The cemetery has suffered a great deal of neglect and vandalism over the years.
This is the final resting place of three of the four victims of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing of 1963 in Birmingham. The information concerning these three young ladies can be found on Find-A-Grave. Their names are Addie Mae Collins, Carole Rosamond Robertson and Cynthia Dionne Wesley.
This transcription covers only the military related stones in the cemetery. It includes five graves of men killed in action during the Vietnam War and the grave of one man who died of wounds from combat during the Korean War. This transcription was completed in 2014. It is true and accurate to the best of my ability and training.
